Mahalo Hawaii

Aloha again – it’s the last day. I’m sitting on my balcony overlooking Waikiki Beach, it’s a beautiful, clear day and the sun is shining bright. I fly out tonight at midnight, which is about 5am Toronto time… I was trying to decide what to do for the day since the hotel checkout time is noon, but I wound up extending my stay – paid for another night so I can keep the room until I leave.

This hotel is everything I could have asked for in Hawaii and more. Right across the street from the beach, beautiful old hotel very nicely upgraded, amazing view from my 25th floor suite of both the beach and the mountains, great pool and hot tub and on and on and on. I would have been quite sad to have stuck around for the day without it.

This trip has been a bit of an internal struggle – to relax or to do things. Luckily I’ve been to Honolulu once before and did a lot when I was here, so it’s been a lot easier for me to relax. The beach is wonderful, the pool here is also fantastic as it’s got none of the craziness of the beach. I’ve read a lot of books, I’ve done some touring… went to Diamond Head again which was great. Took a ride in a Glider on the other side of the island which was a very cool experience. Went to the Honolulu Zoo again, lots of fun to see all the animals. Did a lot of walking around, met some great locals, and just generally fell back in love with Hawaii.

In case you couldn’t tell, I am not at all looking forward to leaving.

The weather has been amazing and I am not at all looking forward to going home to zero degrees… and coats… and sweaters… and bleh. The Hawaiian way of life is certainly appealing.

I still need to pack things up but that won’t take too long. I’m thinking of spending the rest of the afternoon around the beach and the pool. PF Changs for dinner, maybe a bit of shopping after that then a nice walk along the beach with hopes of a clear sky followed by the sad trip to the airport and a 10 hour overnight flight home.

I get in around 2pm so my challenge is to stay awake and hopefully avoid jetlag. I’ll catch up on emails as soon as I get back (groan), and then I need to find something to occupy myself for a while before bed followed by an early morning tomorrow for payroll!

I’m already pondering my next trip as I sit here… in July we’re off to Florida for my cousins wedding, but it might be good to have a little something in between. We’ll see how things go and what comes up.

So that’s it… last day, last few hours. I can easily say this has been one of the most relaxing vacations of my life. I’ve been getting such amazing sleeps, I haven’t had work or really anything else on my mind except where to eat next and what time to go down to the beach. Not a bad recovery from what was looking to be a pretty awful start to the New Year!
