Hello everyone! Tomorrow, March 23rd will be my 26th birthday, and I’ve been trying to figure out how to celebrate! I’ll be away from home for the first time on my birthday this year, spending it in the wonder that is Ireland.
So I’ll celebrate in two ways – one, by making this post super short (in comparison), and two, asking for your help. You may or may not have heard of the “End Polio Now” campaign run by Rotary International. There’s not much to explain – Rotary is working with organizations and governments world wide to End Polio Now.
25 years ago Polio was rampant in 125 countries. Today, through the work of this amazing organization and others like it around the world, there are 3 countries left on the list. Polio is a crippling and potentially fatal infectious disease, and we don’t see or hear about it much in Canada, but for as little as US $0.60, a child can be protected against the virus for life.
So we’re 99% there, but if we don’t finish the fight right now, more than 10 million children under the age of five could be paralyzed in the next 40 years. We are THIS CLOSE!!!
That’s why I wanted to ask you to participate in the End Polio Now campaign! I know you weren’t all planning on going out and buying me presents (but…but…why not?!), but you can make a difference today by donating to the End Polio Now campaign by visiting the website at http://www.endpolio.org/en and clicking the “Donate” button.
Don’t have money kicking around? Join the campaign anyway! Click the “Share your voice” link on the website and donate a tweet or your Facebook status to help the cause. And if you want to have some fun, join the Worlds Biggest Commercial by adding your photo! You can join the ranks of Jackie Chan, Bill Gates, Amanda Peet and thousands of others around the world by just uploading a picture of yourself showing how close we are to ending Polio!
So that’s it! I’m donating my birthday to End Polio Now. Thank you in advance for your kind wishes, and thank you in advance for joining in the campaign!
